What the Hell is a “Hipster”?

I only ask, because I keep hearing jokes at their expense and they jacked up the price of my favorite cheap beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Aside from finding out they were directly responsible for a short $3 price hike in bottled 6-pks of  Pabst ($4.99 to $7.99) , I wanted to find out what this “hipster” thing was about.  I’d post the results and a few links, but it is essentially the same as any other “new” cultural  group out there since forever; a population of young to middle-aged people who identify with a certain music and dress style, with a weakly defined collective sense of what they’re “supposed” to be. In the case of “hipsters”, they decided to go with the tried-and-true “non-conformist” attitude with tones of intellectual snobbery.

I think there is something about “independent” music in there too, but we all know what that racket is about now that the Internet is here. Besides, it is never okay to be a jerk because somebody doesn’t know who “Sonic Bowel Movement” is. Of course, “hipsters” don’t care what you think or about anything else, so there’s that, too.

So I’ve come to the conclusion that “hipsters” are some form of  sentient grunge kids from the 90’s. Now we know what happened to them; they grew beards and stopped listening to Nirvana.

I also want to know why you become a “hipster” if you talk about  “hipsters”.  I love it. What a diabolical way to swell the ranks and deter criticism at the same time. Too bad that sh*t didn’t work when I complained about Jocks as a kid, because I would have gotten laid way more.

I tend to think “cultural” groups like this are just clothes, music and another market to sell sh*t to. Just what has any of these groups ever done, other than create consumer trends, Internet memes and jokes? Nothing; aside from jack up the price of things I already like.
